Day Five - Fun and Frustration!

Hey everyone. Time for my longer update.

First the none poker stuff for a change! Checked out Planet Hollywood in detail today, as well as Paris. Both are lovely casinos though the eiffel tower was closed due to a big incoming storm tomorrow! Will definitely have to have a meal up there before home!

While in Paris, decided to book to see this naughty hypnotist. Meant to be one of the best shows in Vegas, so will see that Tuesday night. Also found a good Grand Canyon tour price. About $359 including all extra fees, with a full tour of several things around the Canyon like the lakes and hoover dam, champagne lunch etc... It's with the most recommended and reliable company, Maverick, who even pick you up from your hotel! Will prob book that tomorrow!

Planet was fantastic. The main restaraunt there was ok priced and recommended, so decided to get some food. Not only were the waitresses the nicest people I've met in Vegas so far, but the food was absolutely fantastic! It was easily the best meal I've had!

Now for the poker... As you know from my last blog I had a quick session this morning, and though made a bad play, came away with $380. Planet was one of the best games I've had, with a lot of skill, bluffs, good hands, and cracked hands. The mixture left me with $90 profit which I was happy with.

Unfortunately had a bad evening over at Harrahs. The play was tight. Too tight. And to add to that there were a lot of regulars. I was down to $40 at one point but managed to leave the tbale with about $120. The frustation in the title of this blog section refers to a specific hand at this game. I raise in early position with AJ to 10 bucks. I managed to get 3 callers behind me so a $40 pot. The flop is AJ8. I bet out $20 first to act. The first 2 players behind call, and the final one who's fairly tight, raises to $100. I have about $120 and am making a decision for all my chips. Think a minute at what you'd do here... I mean what hands are calling my raise pre flop, and the bet on the flop, as well as what hand could that guy be going all in with...

I worked out we could be seeing AA, JJ, 88, A8, AJ, AK, AQ... That's about it! Now there's 2 hands that I'm beating, one hand drawing, and 4 hands beating me. Based on that, I made a big big fold. Another guy behind me folded, and the final person to act goes all in for an extra $10.

The turn comes a Q, River a K so the board is AJ8QK... The guy who bet the $100 shows AQ, and the guy who called it shows 9T to take the pot with a straight. So I was ahead on the flop, but if I pushed, the 9T would call and so would the AQ. I don't think my fold was a bad fold even though I was ahead. In this situation a good 75% of times I'm losing, and for a $120 stack I'm not interested. Dave called this a bad fold which kind of upset me, but opinions are meant to differ in poker I guess!

So in summary, I'm $260 in the plus after 5 days in Vegas. Still ok. The swings and roundabouts come hard and fast, but part of this is about coping with them and still having a good time. This type of thing can only be achieved via experience, and it's proving to be invaluable! One thing I definitely need to consider more is table section, as it would appear most of the frustrating sessions are early morning. Rather than drunk aggressors, it's the complete opposite... Need to think about that a bit more next time I sit down!

Will get some shopping done early next week and get the Blue Man group show booked as well. Lots to do and lots more poker to be played! It's nice to know people back home are catching up with the trip too! Hope I don't have lots more bad news to post!

Night all!

Day Four 1/2 - A Quickie

Well this morning I got up at 11am, grabbed some breakfast inhouse and went down to play in the Imperial Palace game.

I'm updating the blog now as I want to record a specific hand before I forget details, and also update you on my latest session!

I was in late position and looked down at QQ, 3rd best starting hand pre-flop! It's folded round to me, so I raise it up to 10 bucks. The one guy to my left annoyingly calls, meaning he has last position after the flop, and then it's the big blinds turn.

The guy in the big blind is from London. He sits down with $300 a time as I've seen him a few times now. Last night he lost all $300 with a full house on a KK862 board. He had K6 and someone else had K8. OUCH! Anyway he raised it up to $40!!! Grrrrrrr.

So I wasn't sure where I was. I figured he'd do this with JJ, TT or even AK to try and take the pot from me as he knows I'm a tight player. Saying that I strongly figured he was on AA or KK due to the way I've seen him play. Stupidly, I called. I think this was a bad call, but I'm not too sure.

Anyway the flop comes 2JQ. He bets out $50, I put in the rest of my chips. Before he called I put him specifically on KK. He calls my all in and shows the KK! My set of queens hold up and I walk away with $380 and change.

I left the table pretty soon after. It got real tight and I won a few hands with pre flop raises and everyone folding. I'm happy I managed to get another good winning session under my belt, but am a bit miffed I made a pre-flop call of $40 when I knew I was behind! That's bad poker and the winning doesn't justify the wrong play.

Will update again tonight and hopefully will have something more than poker on my mind :) Think I'm going to go book a couple of shows and see a few new places! Next week will be shopping, shows, grand canyon, but definitely more poker!

See ya!

Day Four - Ups and Downs

Hey all.

Not going to be a long one this as may update it again later tonight.

Got up and went to the Venetian to check out the games. Sat down at a great table, and carried on from where I left off last night with sick beat after sick beat. KK v 66, AQ v QQ on a Q52 board, KK v QQ on a QT6 board etc etc. Ended up getting stacked and losing the $200!

That means I'm about $11 up or something irellevant. Went for a break and a review of everything. Chilled out and decided that as I'm playing well I should carry on. Took it to a table at the Imperial Palace where I felt comfortable. Even though my KK, AK, and AQ got cracked (all winning on the flop), I came away $60 up!

So feeling good tonight. Had a run of cards that really hurt, yet I'm still about $70 up through poker so far. Not bad compared to what it could have been!

Anyway enough poker for now. About to go to Pure club in Ceasers and do a bit of drinking for a change. Will have a fun night and carry on enjoying the holiday.. Just what it's all about!

I'll let you know how Pure is, but decided to write this now in case I forget or fall asleep or something!

Bye for now!

EDIT:

Well It's now 2am here. Back in the hotel room and disappointed to find that our passes for Pure don't work this weekend as it's Labour weekend. We were only told after literally 2 hours of waiting though. Seeing as our passes will work every other day except this weekend, we decided to skip it and go back another night!

To ensure the night wasn't wasted we went and had a quick look round the Bellagio. Nothing special but we thought we should familiarise ourselves with it. I've never seen such a busy poker room!

Anyway I'm going to go to bed now. Feel much better tonight than I did last night. Even though I got stacked again this morning, I ended up having a winning session and hopefully things will be back on track tomorrow!

Day Three - Ugly Day

There was no way I'd win every session in the holiday. Today was the first day true No Limit variance prevailed. I got lucky in a few hands yesterday and came away with $360. Today I was hit with some incredibly sick situations, and ended up about $160 down. At least in the grand scheme of things, I'm $200 up. Right now however, I'm $325 down from the sessions I just played (was $160 from a session this morning) and thus feeling it bad.

Before I get to the details, one important message. Happy birthday mum! :D Sorry I couldn't be there but I'll try and bring you back those Uggs all women seem to crave! Missing you and will look forward to seeing you when I'm back :)

Now to the poker... 3 sessions. First Flamingo, second Imperial Palace, third Bills.

In Flamingo I had a pretty good time. Some maniac was to my right paying off every pair I hit and was doing pretty good. Some guy gets to a flop against me, and I enjoyed it loving my KK. The flop was a Q63, with 2 diamonds. He bets, I push as he has $70 back, and he calls with the diamond draw... Then hits it.

So that meant I left Flamingo with $360 which was pretty good, even after the beat. Took it to the Imperial Palace and found the worst game I'd played in. Tight, boring, nothing happening. No massive hands to note, but every AK, KQ, KK, QQ, TT, and any suited connectors I played missed within about 40 mins. I wasn't going to make $125 back with how tight that table was so left for Bills.

Finally, in my last session, there are 4 drunks on a table raising from $1 to $16 without even looking. I lost 3 massive hands here which took all $200.

First one I have top pair on a T63 board, something like KT. This maniac to my right bets $10 with $70 behind. 2 clubs on the board and I know he'd bet that with pocket 2's! I push all in hoping for the call, which he does. He shows a flush draw, hits it on the river. I lost about $200 today in flush draws hitting alone!

Next I have AQ, and the flop is an amazing AAJ. I'm against this tight player who makes a move every now and then in position. I check the flop first to act hoping he'd make a move, as he wouldn't call if he doesn't have an ace. He checks, and the turn comes a T. I bet $5 to see if he's interested and to raise the pot value. He raises to $15, but with my image, most players would have done the same... I didn't represent the ace before his raise, so knew he put me on rubbish. (He admitted later he thought I had nothing at this point). I played back and pushed all in for a further $80. He takes 10 minutes, calls, and shows me KQ for the straight ace high. I was pretty angry he took so long to call. Who folds the 2nd nuts for 80 bucks to someone playing lots of hands?

Lastly the drunk on my right raises to $16 without even looking!!!! I have KQ suited and only 50 bucks. I ain't folding here, but calling would be silly, leaving me with $34 when there's a pot of $32 out there. I pushed all in, he called wthout looking. Board comes, I miss, he shows an Ace, goodnight Vienna!

So lets look at the maths. $168 up from flamingon, $117 down from Imperial, $200 down from Bills. That makes about $149 down today. Yesterday was $360 up, so still $211 up.

I'm happy with how I played. Maybe table selection could have been thought of more, as that game was super aggressive, but the tight ones don't appeal either... Something to think about!

Anyway for the none poker readers, sorry! This blog kind of has been all about the poker. Tomorrow will be another intense poker day, but then we'll be sight seeing some more at the weekend and check out a few clubs. Pure at Mirage is meant to be sweet so will pop there tomorrow!

I guess that's it for now. Summary shows, end of day 3, $211 up. Lets hope the variance turns back my way!

Speak soon!

Day Two - Shuffle Up And Deal!

Hey guys. It's 02:22 here and just finished my final session of the day. Planning on playing later and later every day but finding it hard to keep concentration at this time!

As the title suggests, today was all about the poker! It was great. Got up, had breakfast, played poker. Had lunch, played poker. Had dinner, played poker... And now we're here!

The bad news is I've got a ravaging headache and am still feeling frustrated about my last session, as it was incredibly boring and tight, which at 1am isn't good.

The good news is I came away with winnings from every session!!!

The first 2 were at home in the Imperial Palace. We gave the 1/2 NL a go after breakfast and found a juicy juicy game. Every big hand paid off, and I walked away with $460 after a $200 sit down!

After lunch we walked around the mirage, venetian and treasure island trying to find another decent game. Unfortunately the mirage and TI was limited in terms of poker, and the venetian had about 8 tables all full! Came back to our beloved Imperial Palace, and another game was going on. This time it was tight tight tight tight tight. I got some hidden luck when a maniac came and sat down to my right. Betting big without looking at his cards. In a big pot I ended up calling a big river bet with Ace high would you believe. The board had 2 pair with a deuce as the final card, and the guy bet $40 into the pot already at $80. Anyway I called and he showed 56 for his 6 high!! After that he left, it tightened up, and I walked away with $260 from the $200 sit down.

Finally we went to Bills Gambling Hall just a few casinos down. Heard good things about it. The only game on was a $1 NL... that's right... $1. One blind at $1! Never seen anything like it. As I expected the game was SO slow and boring.... I kept missing all my hands and was down to $140 from $200 by about 1ish. Suddenly a few left, a few came in, and the table loosened up. At that point I rivered a straight and got pocket aces, paid off big both times, and left with $260 again.

So in summary, I'm up $380. It's early days and variance will inevitably occur. However it's a fantastic feeling to come to vegas, and on my second day being able to equivalently have a free week here. Lets hope it continues!

Tomorrow I'm still undecided. Do I go to a few new places on day 3 down at the end of the strip, or do I play a bit more poker where I know I can find a good game! At least it's not a choice between Sainsburys or Tescos for my weekly shop...

Thanks for your comments so far :) The blog feels kinda good, summarising my day and sessions!

Ta'ra!

Day One - Wow!!!!

Well the title sums up today... WOW.

To start off with the flight was ok. Slept a bit, listened to music on my iphone for most of the journey, and watched the film 21 several times as I thought it was appropriate.

Landed in Vegas, and as expected was hit by the immense 40 degree heat and blistering sun. I have honestly felt nothing like it!

Got to the hotel, and as it's my 21st birthday celebrations, they've upgraded the room to a Deluxe competely free with an AMAZING strip few. Absolutely incredible. The people are so friendly, and I've had to remember to tip them all too!

The Imperial Palace isn't BIG, but it's nice. Walked down to the MGM and it was the hardest walk I've ever done. Took 20 minutes but felt like I'd just crawled through a desert! Sat down with a glass of water at the first bar in the MGM, and suddenly the waitress gets up on the table with a waiter and starts dancing! Dave and I just looked at each other and burst out laughing! Incredible!

Not much to tell poker wise so far. Imperial Palace isn't busy but looks very easy. There's this O'Neils place which was busy and looked incredibly fishy. MGM was VERY busy, maybe too so, and Excalibur has been refurbished with the electronic PokerPro tables. I'm not too keen on them so may only play the 0.50/1 NL games with a $50 max sit down, rather than 1/2 like everywhere else.

To summarise, I haven't really done much today. It was HOT, I've seen a couple of casinos. Mesmorised by the MGM and how big it is! I'm now about to go have some food before going out again to hit the tables. Hopefully I'll go to bed with a handsome profit.

The final thought on my mind is the amount of seedy guys giving out cards advertising girls. I mean it's disgusting! There lined up all down the strip, hundreds of the guys! They try shoving these little cards in your face too. I really really really didn't expect that! Never mind.

Hope everyone back home is doing well and ok. Missing you all and will keep everyone updated. If you want to contact me it will be best to email, as I'll be using Wi-Fi more than my mobile.

See ya!

The Day Before

Well the excitement has arrived. In less than 24 hours I'll be on a plane flying away to the pokerland.

Finally got my stuff packed with the help of my lovely lady! Coming back may be a bit more worrying mind....

Today I'll research into the profitable casinos in terms of cash poker. The aim is NL1/2 though I want to find somewhere which is swanky, yet fishy. That may be a bit difficult as the good players prefer to play at the nicer players. I guess I'll be able to judge that more when I'm there!

The house is all packed up too ready for my move to Stafford 2 days after I get back from Vegas. It seems we're all ready to go. The last thing to do now, is just wait. I'm planning on staying up all night seeing as I have to get a taxi before 5am tomorrow morning. No point sleeping for 3 hours!

Well this is it. No more posts now till I'm there! I guess I'll speak to you all again then!

Bye for now!

The Introduction

Intro

Hey there!

Ok just created this blog. It is to report on my trip to Las Vegas in 2 days on the 26th of August 2008, celebrating my 21st birthday which is today (the 24th).

There will be internet at the hotel in Vegas so I plan to spend 5 minutes before bed every day updating this blog. It will make it easier than emailing loads of people every night. Feel free to add comments, suggestions, advice, hello messages, or whatever you like! But remember, it'll be public!

Hopefully I'll get some pictures of the trip up here too if you're lucky.

Where

So on the 26th of August at 1pm I land in Vegas to go to the Imperial Palace. I plan on staying there through the whole trip till I come back. Departure date is September 11th which gives me plenty of poker time!

As for poker I plan to "play around" as such, ensuring I get the most out of Vegas in terms of sight seeing, and fish eating.

Who

I'm going with my poker buddy Dave! Check out his own personal blog at http://daveyginvegas.blogspot.com !!!

Anyway that's about it for now. I'll update once more before I leave and the rest will be from Vegas. Chow for now!
